What is Greeting?

“Hi! How are you?” is an example of greeting but do you know what is the meaning of greeting?

According to Cambridge Dictionary, a Greeting is a friendly or polite expression that you say or do when you meet someone or welcome someone. On the other hand, the greeting is an act of giving a sign of recognition.

We can use greetings at any time we meet someone. For instance, on the first morning when we wake up and meet our family. We can also use a greeting when we meet someone who just passes by on the street or our colleagues at the office.

Why are Proper Greetings Important?

There is this proverb that once said, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” This proverb implies we need to adjust how we behave in society or when we visit a place. It is very crucial for us to choose words carefully, including when we greet someone. A great greeting can make the atmosphere comfortable and preventing an awkward moment.

Greetings are divided into two. Formal and Informal. The formal greeting is commonly used in a formal situation or when we meet someone who has a higher position or respected.
